DHI prepared for shipboard tests

18 Jan. 2012

We initiated the first test cycles of IMO G8 shipboard tests of four ballast water management systems for different clients during 2011. The test cycles were conducted in harbours in Denmark, Jamaica, Portugal and Spain.

DHI has accurate flow meters to measure sample volumes in the shipboard test cycles. More than 3 m3 of treated discharge water is sampled for each of three replicates with the purpose of counting viable zooplankton. Minor adaptation of the procedures for performance evaluation onboard enables DHI to apply the same methods in shipboard and land-based tests. This includes the use of a regrowth phytoplankton assay which has proven to be a valuable method for the assessment of viable algae.
