Whereas most ballast water management systems can document performance in high saline water and brackish water according to the IMO G8 guidelines, only a few systems offer documented performance evaluation in fresh water (< 3 PSU).
DHI offers land-based test cycles with fresh and saline waters
At our land-based test facility in Denmark, we have an optimal position to collect high quality natural waters to prepare test waters with the salinities required in the IMO G8 guidelines, including fresh water. Fresh water is collected in a nearby lake and transported to the test facility. Furthermore, we have established all testing procedures needed to conduct land-based test cycles with fresh and saline waters.
Many inland harbours are characterized by waters with low salinities (or practically fresh water), including the harbours in the Great Lakes in the United States. These conditions may be addressed by performance evaluation of ballast water management systems in fresh water.
Manufacturers of ballast water management systems are aware of the value of documented treatment in fresh water: “DHI has recently been contacted by manufacturers of ballast water management systems showing interest in freshwater performance tests”, says Gitte I.
