Regulatory requirements

DHI conducts biological efficacy performance evaluation tests of ballast water management systems in accordance with the U.S. Coast Guard Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged in U.S. Waters and the IMO Guidelines for Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (G8). DHI Denmark and DHI Singapore are recognized test organisations under an independent laboratory approved by U.S. Coast Guard.

The regulations require that the ballast water management system meets the targets below at discharge:

Organism category Ballast water discharge standard
Plankton, ≥ 50 µm  < 10 organisms/m3
Plankton, ≥10 µm and < 50 µm < 10 organisms/mL
Toxicogenetic Vibrio cholerae < 1 colony forming unit/100 mL
Escherichia coli < 250 colony forming units/100 mL
Enterococci < 100 colony forming units/100 mL

Furthermore, the regulations prescribe that the land-based test confirming compliance with the ballast water discharge standard shall be conducted by using test water fulfilling the requirements below.
