Verification of disinfection systems for aquaculture

Ultraviolet (UV) light is used to disinfect water due to its ability to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms.

Several validation test methods exist for UV reactors, for instance published by USEPA (2020) on drinking water systems and ÖNORM (2020), which was harmonized with the DIN 19294. Within aquaculture, Chile and Norway have important industries, and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) has described how to conduct independent testing to obtain their approval.

The NVI approval include relevant parameters related to operation and monitoring of the efficacy of the UV equipment during 12 weeks in operation under relevant conditions.

DHI has helped DESMIs AquaShield system an Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) statement via ETA-Danmark, based on a verification plan that adheres to the requirements from the NVI.
